"Being is, non-being is not" supported Parmenides in the fifth century BC. In the next century Aristotle formalize what we now call classical logic. The effects of this influence for millennia, the history of Western thought.
"To be or not to be" you ask Hamlet, implicit in the universal assertion, the need to hire one of these opposing positions.
Only in recent years the physics back to feed the doubt, now dormant in our minds, and that being is not at the same time.
Of course we are - and we were in this century - yet in a position to translate "panta rei" with "everything flows", we know the fragments of Heraclitus, as we have been taught what constitutes a symbol of the Tao. Perhaps even know the Advaita Vedanta. Yet this knowledge
remain on the surface, what is penetrated deep into our world view is a deep duality, a need for dichotomous choice between two opposites: being and nonbeing.
is not a mere intellectual necessity but of a profound urgency, of a lifeline against a blank too volatile to be accepted.
is one thing to read that in the infinitely small world of quantum matter can - literally - come out of nowhere and vanish into thin air, that the very act of observing silent as noted, it is impossible to determine with precision the position and speed at the same time. Another thing is to realize that we live in this reality.
(Contemporary physics is - unfortunately - even the "seasoning" as used by newager and new religions. But this is just dressing: the substance, in such cases, it is minimally met and concepts assume purely decorative. O, even worse, where the duality is still convenient to make way for vagueness where convenient: schizophrenia ...)
Maybe it is useful to further it means for our everyday perception believe that being is and not being is not. Because we understand it or not, or even that we have less interest in it (indeed, in this case even more powerfully ....), so deeply rooted that case creates our world view. That is all we catalog as "white" or "black" divide constantly opposing and incompatible categories.
So what we are accustomed to this very act of division gives us security.
abhor even the mere possibility that it may be the case since in the absence of boundaries so marked, everything seems empty. The atavistic fear of emptiness often prevents us from even to assume ...
To be and not be at the same time paradox! The most feared by Western logic. What goes against ( paratroopers ) the common opinion (doxa ) awakens in us terror. Yet this fear is subsiding that the greatest minds of history have been able to recognize the profound paradoxes of growth opportunities. Unlike us
the Zen koan seek the paradox. Exploit what has been called paradoxical logic to achieve a vision not being divided, and therefore more real, which is sometimes called enlightenment. Some seem unfathomable
koan, others are relatively easy to explain. In both cases, however, as in any event life, it is not difficult to understand but superficial understanding (taken with), do just a deep level.
The difficulty is just scratching the ingrained habit to draw boundaries reassuring interpretation of reality. Difficult to deal with fear, always a harbinger of doom. Difficult to leave some space where they can flourish fallow pastures, rivers flow, to return to flying butterflies.
difficult but desirable. At least I hope so for me.
